Hathian, a city known for a high crime rate and in many areas poor living conditions, never-the-less has a shortage of accommodation especially in the centre of the town near amenities such as the Clam and other services.
This demand for housing is quite quite interesting, as the safety of one’s living quarters is usually a top priority with perhaps lower demand and safety being found, such as it is, in the outskirts of the city where crime rates seem to be lower and living spaces are either more affordable or so expensive as to imply and suggest unlimited luxury. However if you’re determined to live in the heart of the city there are not that many homes available as most are rented.
Recently, some refurbishment has happened with townhouses nearer the coast having been given a lick of paint. But there still remains a cordon and rubble around the old HGH site as well as a number of shuttered or abandoned businesses.
Citizens Take a View
“I have safety fears. I can understanding living centrally might work better for some, but yeah, I don’t live in the town but out of it. I feel secure getting a bus home each evening”

While taking public transport in the view of this author would seem not to accord to a feeling of ‘security’, it’s great that some do feel that way.
- “They keep telling me I’m at big risk working at the Pharmacy with a risk of being attacked around here!”
- “Anyone wanting to raise a young family in this place needs their head testing”
- “Straight down, you’ll come across the Grind. Police are never out of there, all a girl wants is her oat milk chia to start the day. More often then not it just not happening, always trouble from what I can tell”
These general comments indicating unease with local crime are nothing new, although an investment in more houses and less derelict lots might reduce the chance for petty crime and eliminate some of the known areas where criminals skulk.
With demand for living in Hathian quite high, it would seem likely that the local government might be looking into expanding housing options but as of yet we are not aware of any specific plans, nor for the revitalisation of our commercial District (‘D8’) that remains with some vacant lots. If you’re interested in living in Hathian, or need a job and think you might be able to fill one of the many decent vacancies, it might be worth checking with local real estate agents, or our business pages in the Hathian Observer to see what’s available.
