Residents of District 8 received an eviction notice during the evening of the 8th July 2023. The mayor’s office apologized but rather than waiting anytime of customary period kicked people out of their homes anyway, predicting compensation to follow.

Will Hathian residents be compensated for such a massive construction project? Our journalists sneaked into the construction site and saw that the central park, which was the only one in and around the downtown, had been completely destroyed.

Rumour has it that more than just town houses will be built where the park previously stood and most of the houses will be demolished and reconstructed. We weren’t able to get further details of what might be in store, but as ever with Hathian, watch this space! We caught up with the Chief of the FDH, Dale Warrhol and asked him about the construction works.

“In the interests of public health and safety, condemning so many buildings in District 8 was a difficult but necessary decision enacted by Fire Department Hathian. As ever we are committed to protecting and saving the lives of the citizens of Hathian Parish. We look forward to new safe buildings being constructed in District 8” – Chief Dale Warrhol FDH

Saying Goodbye

We managed to take some pictures of the old type houses. Residents often complained about the poor condition of the walls, leaky pipes, and rats

The townhouse district is also undergoing renovation. We hope that it benefits both residents and the town. Residents will get new, serviceable buildings and through new technology and better use of land the developer will increase building density allowing for more occupation (and more tax revenue as a result).

But, as we noticed, not all neighbors are happy with the new buildings. Some already have graffiti on them.

The builders who are trying to scrub off the paint said it was painted in just one night. Where are the police looking, when they are literally across the street!?

For Hathian, building new venues is always a joy. It will be new downtown residents, new businesses and room to grow existing ones and it will get rid of the debris left behind after the hurricane. But the question remains whether Hathian will turn into another concrete jungle without trees or greenery. We kindly ask the mayor’s office to pay attention to this.
