In a heartfelt interview, we spoke with Denise Russo the co-owner of Flamin’ Cajun , and now the director of the newly launched program aimed at supporting expecting mothers and families with newborns and young children. This innovative initiative draws inspiration from successful models from other cities like the Women, Infants, and Children (‘WIC’) program, focusing on improving maternal and child health outcomes, while ensuring families have access to essential resource, or so Denise says. The Observer put questions to her to find out more.
Observer: “Can you tell us about the inspiration behind H-WIC?”
Denise Russo: “The program’s creation was rooted in the belief that every child deserves a healthy start in life. Drawing from other successful models I came up with H-WIC (Hathian Women Infant Children), I recognized the need for a comprehensive support system that addresses the multifaceted challenges expecting mothers and families face, especially in underserved communities like Hathian. By providing resources, education, and nutrition assistance, we aim to create a nurturing environment for both mothers and their children. With the statistics showing Hathian is overwhelmed with pregnancies, most often unwanted ones. Resources such as this program can hopefully guide new mothers to better situations.”
Observer: “What specific services does the program offer?”
Denise: “The program provides a wide range of services. First and foremost, we offer nutritional assistance, which includes access to healthy food options and resources for meal planning. Food resources are directly provided by Flamin’ Cajun Wholesalers and Farm. They are receiving locally grown and sourced, farm to table nourishments. We also provide education on prenatal care, breastfeeding, and early childhood development. Additionally, mental health support and parenting workshops are integral parts of our services, as we recognize the importance of emotional well-being during this critical time.”
Observer: “I see, how can community members get involved or support the program?”
Denise: “Community involvement is vital! We welcome volunteers to help us with outreach efforts, as well as professionals in fields like nutrition and mental health to assist with workshops and services. Additionally, donations of healthy food items and educational resources can make a significant difference. We believe that together, we can create a supportive village for our families.”
As Ms. Russo passionately outlines, the program’s aims and services – it becomes clear that initiatives like this can transform the lives of expecting mothers and their children, or at least in Hathian could have the potential to do so. By focusing on providing critical resources, education, and emotional support, the program not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the foundation for healthier families and communities in the long run. Ms Russo has stated she recently re-joined Hathian Civil Services as a Social Worker and plans on delivering more social needs programs in the near future. We look forward to watching her visions unfold in helping our community thrive.
