It was a hot summer day in downtown Hathian and most citizens were hiding away in their air conditioned homes or outdoor pools to cool off. The Sigma sisters, however, decided this was the perfect opportunity to help out those in need by providing a shaded food bank table with the supply containernear the strip mall. Several students came to check out the proceedings, either to donate, chat, or receive help.

The Sigma Sisters offered all sorts of basic need items including pasta, microwave popcorn, canned goods, juice boxes, and snacks. They also provided baby supplies such as diapers and wipes for those who needed them. Thanks to the heat there was no fresh food or milk, but there was a cooler sitting under the tent full of all sorts of bottles of soft drinks.

It was a simple system, really. Boxes were prepped and customized as needed and then offered to anyone who came off the street. It was a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere as Jizzabelle and the others worked the tables. There was a steady stream of people, and puppies, receiving boxes and donating cash, time, or goods.

This isn’t the first Sigma Sisters Relief Pantry effort. There have been plenty other food banks set up by the Sigma house both on campus and around town over the past several months.

“For years, social media attention has fostered entitlement,” said Sigma House President, Jizzabelle Lovejoy. “In contrast, service fosters gratitude. Which mindset do you want colleges graduating into adult life and leadership positions?”

Even alumni came by to donate some food to the cause. When asked later about why he had done so Keyate said, “I wanna keep giving back to the students. Gotta give something back and help out my CU friends.”

The sorority plans to continue the work of the Food Bank and expand donation opportunities at upcoming events. Anyone wishing to donate to the truck can come by the Sigma house on campus and talk to Jizza, or one of the girls in the house. Just look for the big pink crate!
