On September 29th, Laveau’s prison opened its door to the public and welcomed potential employees. I was there to ask what inspired this initiative and to be better acquainted with the newly opened facility. I spoke with Sydney November, the woman behind the idea and the warden of the prison.

Sydney’s larger than life personality became animated as she spoke of how she conceived of the fair, she attributed it to the wisdom of her family and friends. The warden views herself as a humble community servant, who believes in the law. She had started as a guard but when she saw the internal posting, encouraged by her then partner and a mentor, she applied for the position.

An Annual Affair

I asked the warden if this event would be an annual occurrence, she responded that recruitment is continuous but that she would evaluate the day with her colleagues and plan for something even better! It is evident that Sydney is ambitious but also a team player. (Team Hopper – Ed)

The prison has however, other initiatives that are worthy of note, “Take a Nearly Rehabilitated Prisoner to Workday” where local businesses could sign out for their very own inmate for the day. The aim is to encourage vocational training and potentially providing working opportunities once prisoners are released.

The warden warns that she would be strict should an inmate fails to return after the day out. The prison also has an educational program directed by Thessalia Marquis, who was kind enough to take me and other visitors on a tour inside the prison.

Prison Facilities

Starting from the lobby where cameras and computers take centre stage, were informed of prison capacities, how food is provided by local businesses. It contained a large canteen that opens to an exercise yard and a television/socialising room.

Books are provided to inmates upon request, if you want to donate to the prison, please reach out to Thessalia. The staff seemed professional and efficient. If you think this is the job for you or would like to an inmate for a day and show them your business, contact Sydney November.

((OOC if you are interested to work at the prison reach out to Sydney November (glitternova))
