It was supposed to be a relaxing dinner eating tacos and enjoying tacos as usual. Dinnertime was approaching and I was heading over to the taco truck for my traditional Lag Tacos, seeing the ambulance parked on the side of the road and Rog, FDH Lieutenant, standing near the truck. It didn’t seem like there was any medical emergency going on, so I approached, feeling hungry!
My hunger wasn’t going to be fixed right away though, as I heard shouting between two customers with some harsh words being thrown. A tall, dark-skinned man intervened, drawing a folded knife and cornering the customer in plain view of the rest of us. If the lieutenant hadn’t called for police presence at the truck, the situation may not have been resolved as peacefully as it was. The customer backed down, the knife was pocketed, and the suspect left the scene without any physical injuries to be reported. When the dust settled, the lieutenant called out to Dispatch that the police were no longer needed on the scene.
The taco vendor, Sati, expressed frustration over the public disruptions and the constant threat of HPD “interfering” near her business. The whole thing was a good reminder of how quickly routine arguments could turn dangerous on campus grounds, even right in front of medical personnel. While the no-guns approach on campus appears to be holding firm, it’s important to remember that there are still plenty of other weapons out there that could be used to cause chaos…
