Posed on the corner off of the main drag and across from the pawn shop, The Daily Grind is a staple to the citizens of Hathian.
Vibe – 5/10
Cement walls with chipped green paint, hard wood floors and limited seating make this coffee house fit right in with the energy of the town. Though, it has been a neighbourhood favourite for years. Not only does if offer the comfort of a Cup of Joe, but it has been the employer of many a drifter and student from the nearby University. The lighting is low with windows that don’t allow much sunlight to come through. Perfect for vampires or those who wish to live like one. There is a small space dedicated for live entertainment.
Taste – 8.5/10
The espresso is dialed in—rich, chocolatey, with a slightly citrus finish that makes you double-take in a good way. The cinnamon roll was good. Nothing special but large and with lots of icing. It was a good pairing with my latte in the mid afternoon.
Service – 9.5/10
Warm, unrushed, and low-key knowledgeable. The design with my latte was very cute. Emiko, my barista was ever attentive while I was speaking with Ms. Winter. She and the owner seem to have a very positive working relationship. While high turn over is a very real thing in the restaurant industry, it wouldn’t surprise me if Ms. Winter not only retains her employees for more than a few days, but attracts new talent.
Menu – 5/10
The menu is limited to coffee, teas, and pastries. However, according to the new owner, Anastasia Winter, we can expect some hot breakfast choices to sit down to in the near future.
Only knock? Limited options for savory food if you’re starving. This is a coffee-first place, not a brunch hot spot.
Final Verdict: 6.5/10

The Daily Grind is the kind of place that offers a solid coffee with great service. The new ownership has her sights set on a bright future with an overhaul of the menu and the support of her talented staff.
I will be back to get another pick me up and see some smiling faces in a town that doesn’t offer many reasons to smile.
