I’m usually just the guy who takes photo’s and lets those who have a true talent in the story crafting department write the story so forgive me for any editing (Never – Ed!) mistakes or just plain ‘bad’ writing.
Having recently returned to the States after spending most of my life overseas, Hathian wasn’t exactly my first choice to readjust to Stateside but it has its charms that I have discovered, mostly on chance. Yes the place is flawed, has issues, and a set of weird rules and alliances that remind me more of something akin to a modern game of thrones then a normal poor city, but it has its charms. The people are mostly down to earth and decent folk.
I took a chance to visit the Gein as I was hungry after doing nothing but reading the Observer employee handbook for the day and well, the owner Estelle was thoughtful in her ability to cater to almost anyone. She had a wicked sense of humour that I’m sure will get my ass in trouble one day as it brought back memories of the raunchy gallows humour of units that I was attached to. As for the customers she catered too? Well… it was first time seeing a Gator up close when it wasn’t trying to eat someone or something, and the owner had apparently trained it like a military dog, Estelle even called it by its given name of Ting. Wish I had gotten a picture of it at the time but I was told it was a common enough occurrence so lessons for next time.
Food in the form of a bypass burger and fries was given to me at the perfect temperature, very tasty even if I was potentially biased at the time being rather hungry, plus the service was impeccable. The owner’s conversation with me and the other guests was lively, witty and made the initial curiosity that the menu had spawned and ledto me ordering from it all the better. I think the only thing I regretted from the menu was the soda which had nothing to do with the soda itself but rather the resulting crash from sugar overdose, my own fault really overestimating myself!
I did inquire about the reason for the dual prices but the reasoning behind it was solid and its not my place to get involved in local disputes here, rather not step onto a landmine this soon in my stay . I’d rather just take pictures and not spend a week on an article of the places in the city but well I’ll just tip my hat and carry on, no point in crying over spilled milk. (For those interested in this tax… – Ed)
All in all I’m starting to get why this city can grow on y’all. Regardless, I’m looking forward to exploring the city, reporting on all the local hot spots from the perspective of an outside cowboy who is just riding thru, and of course catching snapshots of the day to day to stories that I run into.
Finally I guess I’ll throw in a parting comment, if your looking for a place to get good, hot food, and enjoyable company Gein is an option. First article in my career done, here’s hoping the Big Boss doesn’t murder me for some error and the eventual goal of doing an article on all the stores, hotspots and groups can continue.
