The Columtreal University campus is usually a place where tolerance and respect for each other’s diversities is front and centre of both the physical design of the campus (excepting disabled access which is poor) and it is also part of the teaching and ethos of the place. However you choose to represent yourself, you can find a place, even if you’re a cheerleader.
It is clear though that tolerance is a never ending battle, and that victory is not complete. Work remains to be done. The headline image, taken from the inside of the famous CU pub, Murphys, shows an individual who seemed to delight in making obscene gestures towards the pride flags on display outside. The display continued for a few minutes by which point I’d had enough and along with security intended to confront this individual. Yet, once I clearly indicated what I thought (PoS was a polite way of phrasing my anger!) through the glass, he scarpered.
There will always be one or two incidents of racism, sexism, homophobia and other things that we wish, in a modern progressive society, did not occur. Yet it seems that the exportation of liberal and universal values hasn’t reached every student on campus. We hope that University administrators will take note and ensure that this individual, if appropriate, is sanctioned, but more broadly that we reinforce our tolerant curriculum and ensure we can continue to meet the needs of all of the CU community!
