On Sunday 16th February 2025, the grand re-opening of Berthier Street Bakery was set to happen. The anticipation for this event had seemed to be building as the day closed in.
Upon arriving I was greeted by the sight of bright and colourful balloons, streamers, music and people dressed up, really getting into the spirit of things. It is a rare sight to see so many people from all over Hathian and beyond coming together in a genuine display of friendship and community. But the re-opening of Berthier Street Bakery, under the new management of Annika, seems to have inspired such a moment. Staff and customers alike appear to have nothing but positive things to say. The aromas that drift from this wonderful business have tempted myself and a good many others inside to enjoy the most delicate and flavoursome treats imaginable.
As the time for the announcing of the cupcake competition approached, the crowds began to swell. Cakes, cookies and cupcakes were all being given away free to mark the occasion. Everyone was in good spirits. Huge recognitions must go to those that have clearly worked tirelessly to make it happen.
Finally, after much waiting the winners of the competition were announced. In third, came Ayumi Hema, with their ‘Sakura Dream’ cupcake that is as tasty as it is pretty. This cupcake will be April’s Cupcake of the Month. Second, was Dontavius Streeter, with their ‘Taco Corn Muffins’. Some wondered if this was too savoury to be considered a cupcake, but the judges loved it and the bakery staff decided it is a new fusion food they are calling ‘muffcakes’. These Taco Corn Muffcakes will be featured as May’s Cupcake of the Month just in time for Cinco de Mayo!” and the grand winner was Kaidn Zero with their Chili Chocolate Raspberry’ cupcake. Sweet and rich with a kick, it won the panel of judges over! Congratulations Kaidn. In addition to his first prize package, Kaidn’s creation will be March’s Cupcake of the Month. A truly worthy winner!
This reporter hopes that the bakery goes from strength to strength and highly recommends trying all the new cupcakes on offer each month. That said, if you get the chance, you have to try their Espresso Choc Chip Muffins too!
Editor’s note: Annika was recently arrested by the HPD in a raid I am not sure I wouldn’t put it past HPD to assume she is baking things other than cakes in her new business.
Editor’s other note: Dontavius wasn’t who I expected to be a bakery winner, but alongside some of his ‘staff’ he seems good at using left overs to turn into new things.
