The Observer is pleased to feature this letter by FDH Chief Pentewyn, who appears to be somewhat upset at Mayor Boxer’s recent diatribe against the HPD, HGH and FDH, ‘His Staff’ as he calls it.
Dear Mayor Bobby Boxer,
We do not question our existence because our presence is essential for the survival of this city, but let me remind you we are human beings with lives, not disposable entities to be treated with callous disregard. How dare you tell us to ‘have a backbone’ when the firefighters and medics of the Fire Department of Hathian prove their courage and dedication every single day?
We accept the risks inherent in our line of work, but those risks should never extend to what should have been a solemn moment of laying our sister Firefighter Shyla Fray to rest. You downplay the horror, referring to it as ‘light explosive heat,’ but I cannot in good conscience allow you to minimize the tragedy of Fray’s casket exploding. We were subjected to the grotesque sight of her remains raining down upon us, and many of us had to be treated at Hathian General Hospital for serious injuries, including having fragments of her bones removed from our flesh. Additionally, several more harmful explosive devices were detonated. Connor Dupré, the bagpiper who played at her funeral, was killed, and many more were seriously injured.
How dare you speak for Firefighter Fray? You did not know her. She stood firmly against this anarchy and she would have found your misuse of her legacy repulsive. You failed her. You are failing all of us. This city is falling into ruin because you’re too busy indulging yourself at the public’s expense to care about the people who serve and protect it. I, for one, am sick of you, Mayor Bobby Boxer.
The Fire Department of Hathian serves all of Hathian Parish. We maintain neutrality and treat everyone, no matter who they are. Let us keep sight of the fact that we are an essential service. We are massively underpaid but we do this work because it is our calling, our vocation and let me remind you one day you may need our services too.
Sincerely,
Chief Trevor Pentewyn
Fire Department of Hathian
