The family is important, it is the most important kind of community in the world, the basis of society. Nobody will help you, if you need it, so willingly and gladly than your family. Many articles have been written about families, but this one will be about one in particular that is richly storied and interesting. It is about a family that is working hard to build something and improve their livelihood.

Who Are They?

As you can imagine and perhaps many Hathian Citizens even know, it’s not easy when you first come to the United States. People around you may look at you with some apprehension and distrust and may even behave in a racist and xenophobic way. It takes a lot of time to gain the trust of the community and the people around you. You have to work hard, harder than those who have already settled, to show that you are a reliable and great addition to the US population and that you are a strong asset for the whole community.

So, let’s move to the Yheng family. A large family who came from China and who you may have met around Hathian already. (Mu can suck a **** – Ed)

The family have found a great opportunity in the US, settled in Laveau and opened a small restaurant with Chinese specialties including a vegetarian menu! Yes, you heard right; a lot of Chinese people are already vegetarians, they know what’s good for them.

The Restaurant

We are human and we have to eat. That being said, we can choose how, where and what we eat.

  1. What: People who want to be healthy eat vegetarians
  2. Where: People who want to eat well in a pleasant environment with good service
  3. How: People who want to be handy, using wooden sticks (Chopsticks – Ed *sigh*) for eating food
  4. All together! People who want everything, go to Yheng Restaurant. Why? It’s not marketing, I’ve been there several times and the service has always been friendly and the food was great!

It is obvious when you enter the place, they must have invested a lot of time and resources to build this place and make it comfortable. The space is not large, but it is well decorated with traditional Chinese art and paintings on the walls. Girls in bondage on wallpaper, this is the normal and usual way girls in China are treated to prevent them from escaping and emigrating to other countries? Probably not, but it is kinky…

Interview with Ai-Li

Zofia: “Hi Ai-Li, you look amazing. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me.”
Ai-Li: “Oh no always happy to give an interview and let people know about me and this place.”

She offered me a tea and we sat. The atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming.

Zofia: “Thank you Ai-Li. Again I must say your restaurant is wonderful and your family works hard. I spoke with few of your relatives before here and they served great menu for vegetarians. Ai-Li, tell me and our readers something about yourself? How did you come to Laveau? Do you like it here and what do you like and dislike about your work?”

Ai-Li: “Well thank you we have worked hard to make this place a success and a place everyone can come and get the best noodles in all of Louisiana. I actually came to Hathian a few years back. Had lived a few places before that like a place in Michigan that I hung my hat at for a little. They were nice enough places but was still sort of looking for the right place I guess. The I came down here maybe I dunno five or six months ago and just kind of really fell in love with the place.”

“It helped that my sister Ming had already come here and opened up this restaurant which kind of gave me a direction right off…”

Ai-Li Yheng

Ai-Li: “But I really never thought about ending up here. I mean I was born in Hong Kong and came here when I was very little. My first language was always really English. I actually don’t know much Chinese not like my sister does. I’m kind of the Americanized Yheng. I love the work here. I mean we are feeding people and putting a smile on their face what more can ya ask for in a job?”

She looked proud about their place and she has valid reason for it.

Zofia: “Sounds interesting. Ai-Li, you’ve come a long way to get where you are. May I ask, what is your role in the family?”

Ai-Li: “Well I am sort of the go between for a lot of the family. They often come to me when there is something they want. I am the one that does her absolute best to keep the rest of the family happy and doing their best. I also waitress around here and make sure that everything run smoothly.”

Zofia: “You are very helpful and I can imagine you are very favourite member of your family Ai-Li. What are your plans for the future? Do you plan to open branches of your restaurant?”

Ai-Li: “Well I am not sure I am the favourite member of my clan, but I think I am well liked enough by most. Oh, I do have an upcoming part in a local horror movie production. It’s a fair sized part so I am hoping for something maybe to come out of that. I’m also dancing on occasion over at that bar on the pier called Barracuda’s and well, hmmm well do not think there are any plans to expand the restaurant but not really my call that would be more Li-Moon than me.”

Zofia: “Those are great plans Ai-Li. Horror movies are my favourite too! I love danger, seems you love it too? Ai-Li. I know you from Spanky, you were the favourite bondage girl. Are you often tied up? Does your family like BDSM a lot? From the pictures on the walls, I imagine it’s normal for girls to be tied up in China?”

She visibly cringed at my bold questions. But I would do anything for you readers to bring you spicy answers!

Ai-Li: “Umm yes I provided those sorts of services at Spanky’s and I guess, we many of my family have rather particular sexual tastes and uhh, I’m not sure its normal but umm yes it does happen to some Chinese women sure.”

Zofia: “You are all good Ai-Li and you are very hot bondage model! I’ve been to Spanky a few times with you and Saedi. So this may mean that Chinese families may be more into bondage. Ai-Li, it might be hard for you to answer now. Just tell me if you don’t want to, and I’ll skip this question, okay? I heard that you got to problems recently. You were kidnapped? Who did it, why and what happened to you?”

I got the information about the kidnapping from Eu-meh when I visited their bistro. She asked me to write to the Observer about it. But by the time I got around to it, Ai-Li had thankfully been released.

Ai-Li: “Thank you. I mean not sure Chinese families are more into bondage than any other but my family is I guess.” (Spot on – Ed). So yes, it was an awful experience done as retribution for some things that my nephew Mu did. It was done my a man named I believe Melo. He helps run that Serpents Den place on the other side of town. Him and his cronies. I mean what my nephew did was wrong but what they did to me was not right either. But I have moved on from that and am better now.”

Zofia: “I’m sorry, Ai-Li. The best thing you can do is move on. Thank you for telling me everything. My next question is. You’re new here. Have you heard anything about the Disciples? They could be a dangerous group in Laveau.”

Ai-Li: “Never heard of them. Are they some sort of new gang?”

Zofia: “That is good you didn’t hear about them. They are worse than a gang. Hopefully the Feds will soon scatter them. Ai-Li. My last question. Can you please send any messages to our readers? Something you want to share with them?”

Ai-Li: “Well the only thing I can think of is to tell them that if they are looking for the best and truly most authentic Chinese noodles prepared Ai-Li: fresh every day in all of Louisiana then they should come here to the Midnight Mandarin. They will be awfully glad they did!”

Zofia: “Thank you, Ai-Li. That’s nice message. You work hard and I believe you have the respect of the others here at Laveau. That’s all, but if there’s anything else, tell me or ask me.”

After that we just had a friendly chat and I went back to campus.

Conclusion

Readers, the conclusion is yours. Personally, I wouldn’t be afraid to visit the restaurant, however, keep in mind that this is Laveau and we, your Observer staff, have disturbing news from Backwaters. It could be dangerous, even more so than Hathian. It is up to your discretion whether you make that decision and visit the restaurants. But if you do get there, ask for the vegetarian menu.
