Long time Observer reporter, Shequanda Jones, finally lost her long battle with AIDS at the age of 37 this weekend after contracting the disease years ago while working with the homeless community.

Due to complications of the illness, Jones caught pneumonia and was unable to fight it. She died in a New Orleans hospital on the 24th at 3:00pm.

AIDS comes from HIV, which attacks a key part of your immune system. HIV invades cells, and uses them to make more copies of itself, and then destroys them.

Over time, HIV can destroy so many of your cells that your body can’t fight infections and diseases anymore. When that happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS. This is what killed Jones.

World wide, 33.4 million peopleare currently living with HIV/AIDS, and more than 25 million people have died of AIDS since the first cases were reported in 1981. In 2008 alone, 2 million people died due to HIV/AIDS, and another 2.7 million were newly infected.

Prevention is important. You should always practise safe sex, and get tattoos and piercings a clean, reputable businesses that sanitize equipment. Should you be injecting drugs, never share needles. Have yourself regularly tested for HIV/AIDS and other STDs your own peace of mind.
